The Government has released an amount of fifteen billion cedis as its initial support to thirty thousand serving Certificate ‘A’ teachers in public basic schools pursuing Diploma in Basic Education through Distance Education and Sandwich Programmes.
The programmes are being organised by the Ghana Education Service in collaboration with the Universities of Education, Winneba and Cape Coast.
In a press release signed by Mr. Paul Kofi Krampa, the Deputy Director and acting Head of the Public Relations Unit at the Ghana Education Service, said these upgrading programmes are designed to ensure that they impact positively on quality of teaching and help improve pupils’ achievement in schools through effective teaching and learning as a result of new knowledge and skills acquired by the teachers.
The press release stated that the problem of vacant classrooms as a result of many teachers going on study leave would be curtailed since teachers on these Distance Education/Sandwich programmes would remain in the classrooms to teach and would only go for face to face sessions during the holidays.
The statement said under the support scheme, each beneficiary will be given financial support every year with effect from September 2007.
“It is the hope of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports and the Ghana Education Service that this initial support will motivate teachers to put up their best in the classroom and also enable them to pursue their studies with zeal and enthusiasm”, the release noted.
